Simple really.  I don't have a phone.  That's is.

I do have a mobile phone.  I do voice chat on iChat.  I do voice chat
on Skype and use "SkypeOut" to talk to landlines anywhere in the world
for several cents a minute .  That works great to Eurpoe and the USA,
but (last time I tried it) there was nasty lag when talking to NZ.  I
think when you call NZ it must go to Kazakstan via internet and then
back to NZ on regular phone lines.

My parents, being a little older, prefer to call a landline so at one
point I got an "extension" on a friend's Asterisk setup at his house
and I could run a SIP client (or SIP phone) at my place and talk to
it.  But what I actually did was just let any calls go to the
voicemail, which is then emailed to me as a WAV, and call them back 2
minutes later on SkypeOut or the mobile.  But then they got DSL and
Skype and are now perfectly happy using that.
