By itself LDAP isn't that useful in a Windows world.

The best book I can think of which isn't specifically about LDAP but
does have excellent examples of how to use LDAP in partnership with
Samba to provide Windows centric authentication and file services is
'Samba 3 by Example':

dp/0131472216

It is really easy to read and starts off with a simple environment
that gets progressively more complicated and distributed.
By the end of it you feel pretty comfortable combining LDAP
(OpenLDAP) and Samba to provide unified authentication services to
both Windows and Linux clients.
Not only does it cover LDAP but also other useful things like
printers, home directories and the related user/system management tools.
