You could also use a revision-control system like Subversion. That way
the staff (if properly trained) also get a revision tracking system
and automatic backup for 'free'. Unfortunately merging of binary
documents like those in Office is not going to be trivial so some sort
of editor lock-out (like RCS) might be required.

The simple network-mounted share works for a while until someone
causes the lost-update problem but nobody notices for 6 months...
