Given your comments you presumably agree with and fully support the
statements made by the maintainer of cdrecord, or else you would have
indicated your views.
In any case: the short answer is that they created their own fork (which
isn't actually nearly as bad as Jörg suggests) is that personality
conflicts with the maintainer resulted in their decision that a fork was
lest costly than trying to work with the upstream.
This is the good side of open source in action: someone disagreed with
the maintainer sufficiently that they elected to use their freedom to
make their own version of the product.
Only time will tell of Jörg is correct or if the creators of the fork
are ... but we have the freedom to find out.
