There's no way that there's a 4GB limit being hit.

DD does not care about filesystems or limits, it simply transfers data
from one block device to another.

From what I've seen of this thread, the issue is most likely a bad disk.
This can be confirmed by checking the kernel log whilst running the DD
command.
