Hi all,
I'm looking for people interested in helping a Wellington-based Tertiary
Education Provider tidy up their Ubuntu-based desktop and server
architecture.
Potential pieces of work include - and if you feel like just getting
involved for one or two of these on a pro-rata basis, please feel free
to contact me about that.
- resolving a couple of outstanding issues with the Gutsy desktops
(chiefly bad VFS performance - suspect NFS- or HAL- related)
- bringing their Joomla! web site off external hosting, and on to
their regular online infrastructure
- extending their Joomla! system with a private area for graduates, as
well as adding a journal (ie blog).
- moving their critical online infrastructure to Amazon Web Services
- decommissioning a Windows 2000 server - ie, installing Samba on the
Ubuntu server, migrating files and assisting in clean-up. This task
will probably include some Windows integration with the Samba server for
those staff who are not yet ready for a complete switch
- upgrading their Moodle instance to a newer version, part of helping
them move from proprietary to open source student management systems
- completing the operations manual, so that administrative tasks can
more readily be performed by administration and not IT
Their network infrastructure was built by a highly skilled engineer, and
this will be a rare chance to get involved with interesting and useful
technologies. Examples of this include system-wide LDAP integration,
VPN with an Auckland branch, use of Linux-VServer, Cups and Print quota
systems - as well as the above list.
The rate for this work is negotiable, $25/hour is probably not out of
the question for a recent graduate or young enthusiast, and if you know
your stuff then you can probably charge your regular rate.
If you are interested, please drop me an e-mail (off-list ;)) with a few
paragraphs introducing yourself. You don't have to be invincible - I'll
be available for advice, as will certain people from Catalyst from time
to time.
Looking forward to your contact!
Sam.
ps. please do forward this on to anyone you know who is currently
looking for contract Linux work.
