My laptop came with a utility to create restore DVDs[1] - I used that
before blowing it away.

If it didn't come with that, take it back under warranty. If it did,
claim you didn't get a chance to run it yet and take it back anyway :-)

Then run the utility, then blow it away :-)

Hit them in the pocket as hard as you can, to make it not worthwhile
saving a few cents on a recovery disk.

[1] 2 DVDs for just the OS! WTF?! The first debian _CD_ has a whole
bunch of useful apps as well ...
