[wellylug] ubuntu access problem

After converting my kubuntu 7.10 install to ubuntu gnome via apt-get
install ubuntu-desktop I am now thinking gnome has many more merits than
I used to think and am considering switching for good.

One problem though, for some mysterious reason, read access to root
folders is now disabled for all users unless i use sudo. ie, I cant
navigate to / without an error popping up saying something like "access
denied, you do not have rights to access /." This is a real p.i.t.a. as
amarok, my favourite music player (light years ahead of
i-restricted-tunes) relies on being able to read root in order catalogue
my music collection so now it too comes up with an error saying "no
access to /".

Is there any switch in ubuntu I can change to get view root folders
back? I don't want the hassle of going through manually and changing
user access rights.

PS I also now use gdm to log in not kdm if that makes a difference.
