<first post> Hi there, just to introduce myself I'm new to Wellington having moved here recently from Auckland, but don't hold that against me. I'm working with OSS who provide Linux/Unix/Storage/Virtualisation services to a variety of audiences. We're 35 staff in Auckland and a grand total of 3 in Wellington . </first post>
I found an Brother HL2040 does the job nicely for me - and they're less than $100 from DSE. I don't do colour though and like the fast crisp printouts from a laser. When I need a new toner it'll be cheaper to toss the whole printer and buy a new one.
If you find something in the shop you like you can check the support on http://openprinting.org/printer_list.cgi - not exactly distro specific, but helpful nonetheless.

Subject: [wellylug] Compatable printers
Good afternoon (sort of),
What would be your recommendation as a replacement for a
tatty old second hand HP Deskjet that has thrown its hand
in? We have a Lexmark 2470 attached to the Windowbox but
that isn't recognised by PCLOS or Puppy installed here too.
Candidates should be inexpensive, relatively common for
obtaining consumables, and have drivers for eg PCLOS. My
Goooogling indicates that the chances of getting the Lexmark
to say anything are very remote, but I would be happy if
someone can advise.
Thanks.
