[wellylug] /usr/bin/dpkg returns error code (1)

Try the following.

First try "apt-get remove" on the offending packages.
If that fails or it wants to unistall your entire OS or a significant
part of it,
use "dpkg -r --force-depends" on the offending packages after reading
the dpkg man page to ensure you know what that does!!!
