Hello People,
You may remember that I am seriously brand new to the cult of the
penguin, and have been pottering with a load of tat to get a Linux box
to work without expenditure of many dollars (directive from She Who Must
Be). Had Puppy Retro 3.01 running happily from a USB stick with XP in
residence in the donor box and a DSE 1154 modem on Comm3 that dialed in
and out, and the modem has drivers on the disk for Linii of common
flavours up to kernel 2.4.18. Puppy Retro is 2.4.14 . You can follow
the logic: Use the DSE modem which seems to be compatible with a Puppy
that advertises compatibility with the chipset in the modem, and works
over the top of XP, for a cheap thrill. So I installed Puppy on the hard
drive. And of course it goes looking for a serial modem and draws a
blank. I have explored the drivers and found the .tgz and signature
files that apply to generic 2.4.18 distro's, Red Hat, SuSe, and
Mandrake. My question is: What do I do next? Can't really go for the
shop-bought serial modem, and besides, what I have seems so close to
what I need for toe-dipping. I have copied the manual page describing
the respective drivers but have not appended it to this letter as I am
unsure of the protocol for attachments to already wordy mail.
Suggestions as always are welcome.
Thanks,
John.
