[wellylug] ups

Hi Lindsay

I monitor a couple of debian servers (firewall/VPN and F&P)for a small
branch office in Auckland, connected to a small APC UPS (Smart-UPS 420).
One of the servers emails me occasionally to notify me of mains power
failures and reconnections. The office appears to have fairly frequent
short out-of-hours outages (although I'm not totally convinced the
cleaners aren't making poor choices about where to grab a plug for the
vacuum!). This weekend it's bothering me about twice a day to get the
battery changed, but it's been operational for about 5 years
unmaintained, so I guess that's probably not unexpected.

apcupsd was easy enough to set up and works as far as I've really
explored it - pretty much as described above. Documentation seems clear
about scripting clean shutdowns etc, all though I haven't had time to
set it up as well as I should! The one thing that took me a while to
figure out is that I needed to let the daemon run for quite a while
before it would respond to commands (specifically status checks).

So I guess I could say that's a pretty good experience, if somewhat
narrow in perspective!

Lyndsay
