However    route add default gw 203.79.116.1     fails for  network 
203.79.118.0, network has to be 203.79.116.0

To tie this network to eth0 it is necessary to use a mask of 
255.255.252.0 when using ifconfig  (I need to confirm tomorrow and 
work out how to set things up without having to tweak ifconfig and 
route).  Saturn in this case seem to be using a cluster of 1024 (less a 
few) IP numbers under the same gateway.

Broadcast should then presumably be 203.79.119.255 , not as above, 
but this is hypothetical.

I did this mucking around (using the F2 console) during installing 
Debian and managed to install the base system via the cable modem.
