[wellylug] wellylug Digest, Vol 39, Issue 6

I have an Asus Eee PC-701 (original with 7" screen). Runs
hot and battery life not the best. But it is very useful for
what it was intended - highly portable use. Mine has Linux
Xandros OS, which is probably a bit dated now (you can load
a custom version of Ubuntu, but this takes skill and
patience).

More recently, I bought the newer Eee Linux PC-901. Bigger
screen
a lot better. Audio speaker power good. Sound good on
headphones. Battery life much better. One brickbat - the
wireless connection, while excellent accessing an
unencrypted wireless router, can be frustrating attempting
to connect to an encrypted network. It commonly gets stuck
at "Pending". I found that installing update WLAN Patch
Ralink ver.1.7.1, 2008 10 02 caused my problem. Restoring
the PC to Factory Settings (F9 on boot up) cured the
problem. Then I ignored the WLAN update. Ok, I have an older
wifi WLAN, but it is WPA protected and it works!

There is a lot about "Pending" problem if you google "PC
901 Wireless Pending problem". Asus's Support does address
the problem, but the confused and confusing advice offered
refers to putting a numerical key in the set up wizard, but
does not spell out what number. A email thread suggested
"1", but it did not work and as time pressed I did not
experiment. Asus in Oz suggested using WEP rather than WPA
encryption. Useless suggestion, as not much protection with
WEP.Also did not work! The PC-901's manual could be better.

The Acer AspireOne is very good - from what I have heard
locally. A good price can still be had. Battery life is
short, though. OS very quick. Appears a stripped down
Fedora.
