That's not my experience, on either OOo 2.4 or 3.0  :-(

However, I have found that exporting to mediawiki text format from OOo does a 
terrific job of making live references within the document - from ToC, Index, 
and more.  Needs a bit of hand-editing after, but save heaps of work.
