[wellylug] Resolution outside of range

I have a friend who has a monitor that is using 4x BNC connectors,
however the problem with this is that the monitor is not sending EDID
information to the PC about what res and refresh it can handle. This
causes it to set 640x480 as the default mode and you can't go beyond
that. I have also have had the odd monitor that gives incorrect EDID
information in the past, either that or X misinterpreted this
information, causing the exact thing you are experiencing where a mode
or refresh raye is set beyond the monitors limitations. Turning off the
check for EDID, then setting a manual min and max frequency and min and
max refresh rate fixes this issue.

What you need to do is:

 - Disable EDID frequency check in xorg.conf
 - Tell X your max and min refresh rates.
 - Tell X your max and min horizontal sync.

I do not currently have access to this friends machine to check the X
configuration file, so you will have to Google on this subject. You
should have a section in your xorg.conf file for your monitor, since the
latest X is mostly autodetect, the block is likely to be mostly empty.

I do know off the top of my head what to use for the min and max refresh
and horizontal sync:

HorizSync 30-96
VertRefresh 50-160

But replace those numbers with the specs for your monitor, you might
need to Google this. However, X will not set these values unless you
tell X to also ignore EDID frequency info. Now if you Google on this
subject, please be aware that a few years ago they slightly changed the
name of this option, so there will be pages giving you the old way and
the new way. The old way no longer works (I think it was Option
"IgnoreEDID" "true"). If you try the old way, then check the X log file,
there should be a hint in there what to use instead.

I think as I recall, the IgnoreEDID option was split into various
options, the option you want to set, I think was to just ignore EDID
frequencies, something like IngoreEDIDFreqs?? but Google this info, as I
am not 100% sure what this option was called.
