You could be right.

My muttrc has been cobbled together at different times from different
sources and has been working well
until I added the gnupg stuff (below). Perhaps you could cast your eye
over it, because I cannot see anything which
makes mutt look for my *root* gpg key (886EF91C) when invoked from
/home/adam  ..
 
** I can sign keys using Icedove so it has to be mutt problem. **

I accidentally deleted your email about using strace on mutt but will
see what I can do with it.
