Yes I've disabled the fastmirror plugin which has helped simply  
because http servers are higher up the default list.

It is getting to the point where setting up an internal yum repo will  
probably occur in the future.

Virtualisation is great, but you end up battling a proliferation of O/ 
S instances and the associated management hassle :-)
