ndiswrapper? Good luck; in my experience that seldom works
effectively. Are you sure there isn't an open driver for the hardware?

Of course they are: iwlist shows you which access points are visibile,
while iwconfig shows how the card is currently configured.

Usually you would set the card to managed mode, then set the essid to
whatever your network was; the rest should take care of itself.
By "usually", I actually mean: most people, these days, would simply use
the tools supplied by their distribution that manage all of this
automatically; ifupdown or equivalent on your platform can probably take
care of most of it automatically.
