Thanks for the lengthy discussion but I think I'll stick with Cygwin,
because I've used it here and there for the last seven years and it
works pretty well considering what it has to deal with.

BTW I remember that in git I have to use autocrlf = true because some
people want to use KDiff3 as their merge tool (and why not) but that
requires autocrlf for some reason... probably can't handle DOS text
files.
