No, but I have a Vodafone 3G card plugged into a Soekris running
Debian Linux in my car [1], and it uses ppp to connect up with the
below settings. I'd have a look in /var/log/pppd.log or similar for
errors seeing as Kubuntu's GUI is probably just calling ppp in the
background.
Also see if you can turn off compression (bsdcomp, vj, any other
types) seeing as I don't think VF support it.

[1] I also have one that I use with my MacBook, where it worked
beautifully out of the box :-P (cue lynching)
