It can be sometimes, but the first result I looked at for this search recommended the use of -R.
A google search should at least be your first port of call. Obscure stuff can be difficult to find pointed answers to, but it's pretty safe to say that any message you receive on a Linux command line will have an answer in the first hit. You may have to scroll down a bit if it's a forum, but *usually* bad results only come from bad queries.
