I think you will be unable to update - and for that matter effectively
use - Ubuntu off a live cd. If you establish that it works and really
want to use it for more than browsing, the options appear to be to
install it either as a dual boot or only boot or create a USB memory
stick boot which can work well and gives the possibility to update the
OS and save your own files, onto the usb.
Another option which I think from memory works is to use a sudo
command from a terminal to access hard disk space, but that will not
allow you to update the OS whch is inaccessible on your cd.
