In answer to queries from the list ..

Tohunga-2:~# xdpyinfo | grep dimensions
  dimensions:    800x600 pixels (226x159 millimeters)

Monitor: MAG Innovision 770FS

Re "enlarged" .. I mean scaled up, bigger, consistent with a GUI
larger than  screen area.

I have fixed the effect in gnome session on the lenny box by choosing
the largest resolution via  System->Preferences->Display
In other words the session is correctly scaled to the screen.

xfce session on the lenny box does not give me these options (or am I
missing something here ?).

xfce session on the *etch* box also had GUI larger than terminal, and
kept hanging .. probably due to limited RAM.

Occurring across both boxes I thought it might be the terminal, but
playing with
Ctr-Alt-(plus or minus on the numeric keypad) only made it worse on the
lenny box using xfce.

Googling by "lenny resolution change" brings up quite a large set of
posts on the subject,
suggesting that it might be a common problem .. or a bug.
