[wellylug] ADSL modem and Linux router/firewall without double NAT

I'm looking for an ADSL modem which will allow me to use a Linux box
as a router/firewall for my home network _without_ double NAT (e.g. a
modem that will effectively act as a bridge between the PPPOA
connection and a PPPOE connection).
I thought this would be straightforward, but some googling suggests not.
Has anyone got a working setup?
I have looked at the following, but would like to avoid spending the
money unless I am fairly confident it will work:
* The "half-bridge" thing with, say, a Dynalink 1320 ("half-bridge"
gets mentioned a lot, but often because it breaks rather than because
it is a good solution, and Linux seems to pose particular problems
because ISPs here put the default gateway and the IP for the modem on
different-subnets)
* The Thomson modem that Telecom "gives away" (TG585; from the docs
seems to have some bridging capabilities including to ATM, but there
are stories of it being locked down by Telecom)
* Vigor 2700e (claims to do full PPPOA to PPPOE bridging but the docs
are lacking and it seems to require MTU/MSS tweaking)
[Before anyone suggests cable or wireless: I agree that they would be
so much simpler than the dog that is ADSL in NZ, but cable requires a
new power pole that will upset the neighbours and I am out of range
for wireless].
