What sort of target audience?


If you are talking about Linux-based replacements to commercial
enterprise NASes, you can easily build a Linux server with RAID and
plenty of hard drives.

Data can be made available at the block level with technologies such as
iSCSI, ATAoE or GNBD.

Or you can provide a network filesystem such as NFS or SMB/CIFS.

I just use a large server full of hard drives. This is a bit noisy, but
if you are looking for a lower power, quieter solution, a PC based of a
mini ITX board could be just what you want.


If you are looking for a cheap home NAS replacement under $500 or so, a
second hand server may do the trick, but power consumption might be a
bit high.
