I get the output below.

.. and then it freezes. There is no GUI ..
Luckily I also have Abiword 2.4.6 and 2.5.6 both built from source
to use on a daily basis, but I have not struck this problem before.
Having got this far, and hoping to install a plugin with vi options,
I hope there is a relatively simple fix.
