[wellylug] installing vodem on ubuntu/old sony laptop

hi all,

i recently installed ubuntu 9.04 on a rather old sony vaio pcg series
(p3 500mhz, 192mb ram). it seems to be ok but i can't get it to
automagically install the vodem when i plug it in. i downloaded an
e220 linux driver .deb file from the net, loaded it onto the laptop
and tried to install it. the 'apply' button is dimmed out and, being a
complete noob, i have no idea what to do next. googling around
suggests dependencies might be an issue but i don't know how to test
this.

so ... yeeeah. i'm kinda stuck. what's my next move? no probs bringing
it to the next wellylug meeting if that's easiest, in fact i might
even come along anyway.

cheers,
Dean
