Lindsay,
I would be keen to take you up on this offer. I have a PC which I would
like to get Linux installed on. My preference is for Debian, as I have
Etch install cds. The hardware I have was purchased from Ascent in 2004,
so I hope it is up to the job. Here are the specs:
Gigabyte GA-7VM400AM motherboard, Socket 462, 333MHz FSB, 2xDIMM, DDR,
8XAGP, 3xPCI, 6xUSB 2, Video
AMD Sempron 2400+, 1.67GHz, 333MHz, Socket 462, Retail pack with fan
Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 ST340014A, 40 GB, 7,200rpm, 2048K cache,
ATA-100, Fluid Bearing Hard Disk
TwinMOS 512MB, DDR-SDRAM, DIMM, DDR400
Colors-it C8002-C43, Mid Tower Case, 350W ATX PSU, Blue + Keyboard,
Mouse and Speakers
I also want to be able to use a newly acquired webcam - DSE XH 5223 -
and get my wife chatting to her brother and family in London.
My software requirements are:
- r/w access to my windows partitions (4 in total)
- ability to use a usb key
- email client that can integrate with my Pegasus Mail files
- Java ide
- MySQL
- WinMerge equivalent
- genealogy software
- Firefox/Iceweasel
- Putty ssh client
Let me know if you're happy to help.
Regards
Peter Lynch

I would be happy to host small weekend meetings here at 470 Evans Bay
Parade. Good buses and parking. Cable internet.
