Have you tried Gallery2?

It's pretty awesome at automated imports and gathering metadata and
hosting it on a web site.

The only issue is if you want to "take" it with you then either you
can run a local copy of the database+apache, or sync the pictures up
and down using RSync or similar.

I have found it great to allow friends/family access to our home
portal, and having security to allow users access to picture or not.
