Ha. On conferring with my colleague, I have discovered that this has
not been true since Gutsy Gibbon. (My desktop is Intrepid, but has
been continuously upgraded since Feisty so it has quite a lot of
cruft).

Sorry about this. I bet there is a proper GUI on a stock Intrepid
install, but now I can't say what it is :(
