That might be your problem, then: gigabit Ethernet in a reasonably different
protocol to the older 10 and 100Mbit stuff, and *requires* auto-negotiation.

On a bunch of older equipment you would get only 100Mbit channels without
negotiation on the switch; I suspect you may be seeing the same thing.

Have you tried with auto-negotiation turned on?
