[wellylug] Slow video decoding in VLC after Debian upgrade

Hi all
I finally upgraded my machine to Debian Lenny, after deciding that
iceweasel with no security updates was too dangerous. Now I am
noticing a dramatic slowdown of video decoding in VLC, and I can't
work out exactly what is causing it.
As well as the switch from Etch to Lenny, I switched from KDE to
Gnome, but nothing else has changed.
Has anyone else struck this? Is there some obvious setting to tweak?
A known problem with Gnome or the newer version of the ffmpeg
libraries?
Looking at 'top' shows idle activity over 90% until I start the decoding.
I have also tried Totem, which is faster but still nowhere close to as
fast as VLC on Etch -- can barely manage 15fps with 640x480 MJPEGs.
