[wellylug] Newbie here! WiFi issue and new computer

What sort of budget do you have?  Are you after a netbook or something 
larger/faster?

Most of the netbooks work pretty well with linux -- some are even sold 
with it, although they're hard to come by in NZ.  My Asus Eee 901 runs 
Ubuntu 9.04 with no problems, it's wonderful.
