The 'yet to be released' bit scares me a little - owners of older machines are not necessarily the ones that want to deal with something that's not well bedded down. I'd rather wait for a little while - but the option of installing from the alternate boot CD and selecting the lxde desktop from the standard repositories sounds more attractive.
Interesting that Xubuntu used so much more memory - but the choice of apps didn't look that great, anyone know if it's the default apps for Xubuntu? I notice the memory gap widens when apps are opened, but for many of the apps selected there's a chance to open the same apps on all three desktop environments and compare apples with apples. Firefox is always a killer for older PCs, and the author didn't even try to use OpenOffice.org.
It strikes me that most people with an old PC that want to run a desktop on it will be wanting to use it for mail, web and documents, plus maybe a music player and video player. That means OOo and Firefox will require a bunch of memory no matter what the desktop. The older PC's really are only going to perform well as X11 servers with something a bit newer/bigger providing the app.
