Hi John,
Sounds like it can't find a partition, which points to /etc/fstab having
something set in it which it can't find.
You may need to boot into rescue mode, depending on if /root was mounted
when it drops you to a shell. The information needed
to know what is needed next is:
cat /etc/fstab
fdisk -l
vol_id /dev/hda6 (and others)
and, if you use lvm, may need to get lvm started and check the volume
groups in that too.
