Two middle-of-the-night thoughts: Does this matter have the potential to 
absorb way too much of the Forum's time and attention and be better 
dealt with off-line or by a face to face with a willing member, and 
nextly might there be a way in to the problem via a live CD of the OS 
which I have? Remember, I'm huge on enthusiasm but short of knowledge 
and work days away from a connection to the Forum.
