[wellylug] What burn in/PC diagnoistic tools are out there now?

Have you tried booting it off a live CD or a floppy? Doing this may help 
eliminate or confirm a problem with the hard drive or its connections.
Note:Spinrite is one possible tool for this (or a comparable equivalent).
