OK, team. I got UBCD and ran the disk integrity utility which found no 
mechanical problem with the drive. I looked at the file tools but they 
are about, ooh, that many metres above my head so rather than tinker, 
which is what got me to where I am now (!), I decided to call for the 
Cavalry. Could anyone assist in the next step please?
