The most likely thing you are missing is one of these packages (depends 
on distro):
 - libc6-dev
 - libc-dev
 - libc-devel
 - libc6-devel
 - glibc-dev
 - glibc-devel

This library is the core C standard library and you will need it to 
compile just about any C (or c++) program.
