I've certainly found "The Ultimate Boot CD" a perfect tool for 
determining a system's specs.

It's free and does most (if not all) of the stuff that the pricey basic 
MicroScope 2000 does.

Beware, not very user friendly, and some of the programs could munge up 
your system.  But there are a few that are perfect for system info: e.g. 
AIDA16 and PC-Config
