Ok - I didn't say it was the same, I said it was similar, but your
point is taken.

Emacs+TRAMP opens a file on a remote server by transferring it to your
workstation (perhaps via SSH, or a bunch of other protocols) where you
can edit it in an editor process running on your workstation. It's not
the same thing, but it is a rather similar idea.
