[wellylug] mounting on Mac

It is definitely possible at least for some version of Mac OS X, I found one of those MacOS X software packages to do exactly this. It worked fine for both reading and writing - the only weak spot is that it wouldn't fix filesystems that hadn't been properly unmounted, instead it would simply refuse to mount them.
The filesystem was ext3, and I believe it did mount it as ext3 but I can't be entirely sure on that point - I suppose it could have mounted it as ext2.
I used it fairly constantly for several months without problems, but the hard-drive involved only really stored music, so there was a fair bit of reading I guess, but only relatively small amounts of writing, and definitely nothing terribly intensive.
I do recall the software was no longer maintained, though, so it may not work with later versions.
Unfortunately my Mac mini is pretty sick these days - it no longer boots, and I haven't gotten around to fixing the damn thing. I can't remember any more details about the software. So I can't help you any more in your search to say it's definitely out there somewhere.
Assuming I can get the data off the mac mini, I can tell you what I used - it's been sitting in a drawer for months, but maybe I'll try something this weekend.
It is a bit unfortunate if the best common filesystem between two unix-like operating systems based on free software turns out to be NTFS...
