Worth citing for the record that Windows has basically the same issues;
Windows Update works well on a per-host basis but enterprises with several
machines behind the same link deploy WSUS and have to maintain a similar
sized repo of updates.
There's probably a market for a simple repo for caching updates in the
manner you're looking for, i'm unaware of any simple tools for doing it
short of Callums suggestion, and am looking forward to seeing other
answers :-)
You could try posting to NZLUG for a wider audience, too.
