The Graphics Card is an ATI Radeon HD3200.

I made a mistake in my earlier post. I should have said it as 11.04 that
I installed and got the Purple screen. Earlier, when I tried to install
11.10, the setup seized about half way through. I’m using the alternate
install because when I downloaded them, I was on dial-up. I checked the
MD5 sums for the .iso images and they were a match, and I checked the
CD's at the start of install and all was good.

I have has the machine running Linux before as a dual boot machine, but
this is the first time that I have had the machine solely running Linux.
I recall that the machine would only run an earlier kernel version,
since running the latest kernels would bring up the same problem, a
purple screen and nothing else.

Is it because its a 64-Bit release? Or is it a graphics driver problem?
At least one thing has improved, I now have broadband so I don’t have to
shag around with dial-up connections or internet connection sharing.
