About Ubuntu and modems.

1. Modem app. I've tried and used several apps. The one I found simplest and
easiest is Gnome PPP. It can be configured from a GUI. It does not need any
terminal commands.

2. Winmodems. It seems that your Motorola SM56 is a soft modem, aka
winmodem. It can be hard or impossible to find suitable drivers for
winmodems. I gave up on mine! It is probably easier to get an external modem
(which is a hardware modem) or a hardware modem on a PC card - try Trade Me!
