I don't know much about gnome/gconf/SuSE specifically, but...

It looks to me like you need to copy & paste those lines into your
shell so the environment is setup correctly for subsequent commands.
Various session-scope services such as ssh-agent and X11 itself use
this model. It should all happen automagically when you log in, if
everything is installed and configured correctly.
