I had a similar project recovering data from BBC Micro 5.25" floppy discs
circa 1982 vintage back in 2004.  I was lucky since I managed to extract most
discs completely and some discs partially even though they weren't named brand
media (although the Beeb used much lower densities of course).  IIRC it is
possible to do raw data copies with error correction given the right drive
although as Ewen points out once it's stuffed - it's stuffed.
