How complex does this need to be.
I'm sure current members can be informed of events via an email.
However if you want to network with other groups and spread the word then
meetup is ideal.
The local rails guys use a google group

which also seems to work well.

Maybe pick a few channels, and hopefully find a tool that send to all of
them so that you don't have to update each one individually.
