The mailing lists will rise again! ;-)

They're all good for different purposes - I personally have detailed
technical discussions on a mailing list, use Meetup to find out about
groups, Twitter for notifications and avoid Facebook.

The great thing is we don't have to force people in one direction,
provide the venues, see where the users end up. :-)

There's been talk in the past about having a different provider due to
disagreement over some of the rules/policies on the list, but at the
same time the list provider Ewen has done an excellent job keeping the
list running for years and nobody has ever stepped up to build a
different list and import the archive.

I personally strongly disagree with Ewen's policies on advertising, but
reality is that he keeps it running so smoothly, I've never had much
reason to shift it.

If the need arises, I could move the list onto my server or someone
elses, as long as they make the effort to import the archive.

yay! Still keen and enthusiastic, but somewhat time deprived. (And now
living in AU).
